The Spring Health Trekker Challenge is underway and the physical fitness testing is almost complete. The kids were given a pre physical fitness test to collect baseline data. The test consisted of 1) VO2 test- which determines an individual’s capacity to perform sustained exercise and is linked to aerobic endurance . VO2 max refers to the maximum amount of oxygen that an individual can utilize during intense or maximal exercise.
2) Height, weight and Body Composition. Body Composition gives you the percent fat tissue vs lean mass in the body. This is done using the underwater hydrostatic weighing tank or the Bod Pod.
3) Wingate Test- This test assesses for peak anaerobic power, anaerobic fatigue and total anaerobic capacity. The Wingate test requires the individual to pedal a mechanically braked bicycle ergometer, for 30 seconds, at an “all out” pace.
4) Bench Press-this measures upper body strength. We are also collecting their resting heart rate, resting blood pressure, maximal heart rate and maximal physical work capacity.
The testing was competed at the lab at LSUS Department of Kinesiology and Health Science. The first week of April Dr. Jesse DeMello will meet with the parents and youth and share the results from the fitness testing and give them a physical fitness plan that they will complete outside of the classes and activities we do in the program. We will begin our physical fitness classes the 2nd week of April! The outdoor wilderness programming will take place over the next 3 months!
