One Great River is an innovative project that links years
of successful program practice with recent findings from scientific prevention research. The project was developed by Mothers
Against Drugs of Louisiana, a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization, which has conducted nationally recognized, award winning
prevention programs in Shreveport-Bossier since 1981. One Great River is funded by private contributions.
One Great
River’s Mission is to engage youth in experiential education that develops healthy lifestyles, meaningful relationships,
an entrepreneurial spirit, and prepares them for successful living in a multi-cultural society.
Youth Serving
Organizations representing the cultural diversity of our community are developed into a coalition to promote health. Experiential
education, including wilderness experience programs (backpacking, cycling, river rafting and rock climbing) engage youth peer
groups in healthy lifestyles.
Parents are involved in evidenced based educational workshops to learn effective
ways to prevent individual, family and peer group problems and are introduced to a parent communication network.
